Hungary s Jewish citizens safe, Orban tells deputy Israel s Meridor

<p>Budapest, February 17 (MTI) - Hungary s Jewish community is not in any danger, Prime Minister Viktor Orban told Dan Meridor, Israel s deputy prime minister in Budapest on Thursday.</p>

Orban told Meridor that human dignity is a central value for his Christian Democratic-centre-right government, so members of the Jewish community can feel safe in Hungary, and equality before the law is guaranteed for them, the prime minister s spokesman said in a statement.

    Bilateral ties and a general review of the situation in the Middle East were other topics addressed during the meeting which was part of a two-day official visit, the statement added.

    Orban said Hungary, which currently holds the EU s Presidency, considers stability a particularly important value and will support steps taken in this direction.

    Orban and Meridor discussed possible cooperation in research and development, in which Israel is among the world s top performers, the statement said.

    The Israeli official held a lecture on the turmoil in Arab countries at the Hungarian Foreign Affairs Institute on Wednesday and met deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Tibor Navracsics.

    Later in the day the deputy prime minister is scheduled to meet Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi.
