Floods - Over 10,000 hectares of farmland damaged, says official

Budapest, June 13 (MTI) - Flood damage and inland waters have affected over 10,000 hectares of farmland, Hungary s farm ministry told MTI in Mohacs, one of the flood-hit areas, on Thursday.

Gyorgy Czervan, state secretary in charge of the economy of agriculture, said that most of the flood-covered areas are arable land or, to a smaller extent, grazing land. Some 3,000 hectares were damaged by inland waters and 500 hectares were damaged during access by flood-defence personnel.

Czervan said damage is still in the process of being assessed and final data can be retrieved only when clean-up operations are completed.

There are around 4.3 million hectares of arable land in Hungary, according to the Central Statistical Office (KSH).
