Compromise on student contracts possible, says Fidesz official - TV

Budapest, January 11 (MTI) - The government can reach a compromise with students on the issue of contracts binding them to work in the country, Zoltan Pokorni, deputy leader of the ruling Fidesz party, said on Friday.

Budapest, January 11 (MTI) - The government can reach a compromise with students on the issue of contracts binding them to work in the country, Zoltan Pokorni, deputy leader of the ruling Fidesz party, said on Friday.

Pokorni told news channel Hir TV that the problems was that students do not believe the government so they must be given guarantees.

He said the majority of society today expected students to compensate for the cost of their education by working a set number of years in Hungary, but this may vary depending on the age of the student and the subject studied. He said a compromise was possible on this issue.

He said in the long run Hungary needs to draw in private funds into financing higher education as it is impossible to do so from public money only.

Earlier on Friday Human Resources Minister Zoltan Balog and student federation HOOK agreed on setting up a roundtable to resolve disputes over higher education.

Students staged several protests nation-wide in December against the government s plans to drastically cut the number of state-financed places in higher education.
