Hungary s economic model seamlessly attached to German, says PM

Budapest, November 9 (MTI) - Hungary s new economic model is a virtual seamless extension of the German one, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in Budapest on Friday at the signing ceremony of the government s strategic partnership agreement with Daimler AG.

Budapest, November 9 (MTI) - Hungary s new economic model is a virtual seamless extension of the German one, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in Budapest on Friday at the signing ceremony of the government s strategic partnership agreement with Daimler AG.

Orban called the long-term presence of Germany s modern large-scale manufacturing industry and its role in Hungary s modernisation the cohesive force of the future and the "cement" of bilateral relations.

The prime minister said that Daimler, which owns the Mercedes factory in Kecskemet, central Hungary, manufactures not only passenger cars. It has a "much broader industrial spectrum", and the government seeks to launch cooperation with its other branches, too, he said.

Hungary is building a labour-based economy and expects industrial production to remain the backbone of the national economy, the prime minister said.

Orban said he expected nation states to become rivals in developing good relations with global firms.

"Concluding strategic agreements with these companies, Hungary has gained an edge in this competition," he said.

This is the fourth strategic agreement the government has concluded with large companies over the past few months.

The government earlier signed such agreement with Coca Cola Hungary, pharmaceuticals company Gedeon Richter and aluminium producer Kofem-Alcoa.

Martin Jaeger, Daimler s head of global external affairs and public policy, said the government and the city of Kecskemet had always supported his company effectively.

The Kecskemet car factory opened in late March is one of the largest greenfield investment projects ever carried out in Hungary and the first Daimler-Benz plant in Eastern Europe.
