Budapest, October 31 (MTI) - The process of digital switchover is an epoch-making development in Hungary s television history, the head of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) said in Barcs, SW Hungary, on Wednesday.

Annamaria Szalai spoke at a press conference marking the rollout of the analogue terrestrial broadcast.

Barcs, Sopron (NW) and their vicinity have been among the first test areas of the country s transition to digital terrestrial broadcast.

Szalai said that digital transmission offers more free channels, better picture and audio quality. Within an NMHH scheme, eligible households can apply for a free set-top-box to upgrade their appliances, she said. "Based on results of the first tests, the switchover will be safe to perform nationwide," Szalai added.

Hungary has to complete the switchover by late 2014. Test service digital broadcast is currently received in 98 percent of the country.

To mark the event, the press conference went live on public channel M1.
