Few women in Hungarian politics - paper

Budapest, November 3 (MTI) - Hungary occupies the penultimate place within the European Union in terms of the proportion of women among lawmakers, far behind other nations in the CEE region, national daily Nepszabadsag said on Saturday.

Citing lecturer Gabriella Ilonszki of Budapest s Corvinus University, the paper said that women make up a mere 9.1 percent of Hungarian MPs while the corresponding proportion is 22 percent in the Czech Republic and 21 percent in Latvia.

In Slovenia and Poland where women s quotas have been introduced, 32 and 23.9 percent of lawmakers are women, respectively.

Hungarian women, though, have an interest in politics. Since 1990, the proportion of female parliamentary candidates has increased from 9 to 19 percent, but many of them failed to make it to Parliament, Ilonszki said.

Local politics, however, shows a different trend. The number of female mayors has kept increasing since 1990, rising from 312 to 538 by 2010.
