Budapest, August 16 (MTI) - German carmaker Daimler could start an expansion at its new plant in central Hungary next year that would double output to an annual 300,000 cars, business daily Napi Gazdasag said on Thursday.

Several sources confirmed for the paper that assembly lines could be installed in 2014, allowing production to start from 2015.

The investment is estimated to cost tens of billions of forints and could require a state subsidy, the paper said.

Daimler started production of compact models at its 800-million-euro plant in Kecskemet at the end of March. Second shift started in July. Headcount at the plant is set to rise to 3,000 this year.

A Daimler spokesman told Reuters that it was possible to expand the plant though no decision had been made to do so.
