Washington, May 31 (MTI) - There are no dates for the possible start of negotiations with Hungary, Gerry Rice, external relations director for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in response to a question at a press briefing in Washington on Thursday.

"We continue to be in touch with the Hungarian authorities and with the European partners on all actions needed, including beyond EU treaty infringement, to ensure central bank independence", Rice added.

Legislation ensuring the independence of the National Bank of Hungary has been a key issue to start official negotiations on financial assistance Hungary is seeking from the IMF and the European Union. Late in April, the European Commission said Hungary had taken "sufficient action and commitments" with regard to an infringement procedure on the NBH to start talks on the precautionary financial assistance. The IMF said afterwards that it welcomed the progress and was ready to start negotiations on the assistance "as soon as steps to ensure the independence of the National Bank of Hungary are taken".

Earlier on Thursday the European Central Bank said the amendments proposed to Hungary s law on the National Bank of Hungary "do not go far enough" to guarantee the central bank s independence.

Hungary s parliament is scheduled to take a vote on the amendments on June 4.
