Ethnic Hungarians should use mother tongue without fear, state secy

Budapest, June 8 (MTI) - All Hungarians living outside the country should have a chance to learn their mother tongue and use it without fear, a government official responsible for the nation policy told a conference on Friday.

Budapest, June 8 (MTI) - All Hungarians living outside the country should have a chance to learn their mother tongue and use it without fear, a government official responsible for the nation policy told a conference on Friday.

Deputy state secretary Zsuzsanna Repas said the Hungarian government sought to achieve this state of affairs in cooperation with Hungarian communities abroad.

Hungarian minorities should be "somehow connected to scenes where Hungarian is spoken as a mother tongue", she told a conference about language policy and language rights organised by the Research Institute for Hungarian Communities Abroad. This is a priority of Hungary s nation policy, she added.

Getting a clear picture about the language policy of neighbouring countries as well as the opportunities the EU provides -- or fails to provide -- is a prerequisite for Hungary in devising an appropriate language strategy, Repas said.

Language rights are a sensitive issue for ethnic Hungarians, as the neighbouring countries authorities regularly curb their right to use their mother tongue, she said.

Repas noted that the government had launched a programme for supporting Hungarian nursery schools and a scholarship programme for ethnic Hungarian law students, as well as plans to set up a legal aid network in neighbouring countries.
