Subcommittee proposes criminal investigation against Gyurcsany for public debt growth

Budapest, December 7 (MTI) - A parliamentary subcommittee assessing the reasons of public debt growth in the period between 2002 and 2010 proposed on Wednesday a criminal investigation into the responsibility of Ferenc Gyurcsany s government (2004-2009).

Budapest, December 7 (MTI) - A parliamentary subcommittee assessing the reasons of public debt growth in the period between 2002 and 2010 proposed on Wednesday a criminal investigation into the responsibility of Ferenc Gyurcsany s government (2004-2009).

Deputy chairman of the committee Andras Cser-Palkovics, of the ruling Fidesz party, told MTI that the Gyurcsany government had falsified budget figures which raises the suspicion of violating the budget bill and regulations on public information, misconduct and negligence, as well as the violation of rules on the use of European Union funds.

Peter Medgyessy s government (2002-2004) and Gordon Bajnai s government (2009-2010) committed economic policy mistakes but these do not raise the suspicion of criminal responsibility, he added.

The main opposition Socialist Party and the new leftist splinter party Democratic Coalition rejected the accusation that Gyurcsany s government bears criminal responsibility for increased public debt.

Socialist leader Attila Mesterhazy said that incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his followers had not abandoned their plan to use all possible means to eradicate their political opponent from Hungary s public life.

The Democratic Coalition (DK), headed by Gyurcsany, reacted by quoting an earlier court ruling according to which budget figures were not falsified during the previous governments. The increase in public debt started during the first Orban government between 1998 and 2002 and reached record high during the current government, DK told MTI in a statement.
