Hungary slips to 54th place on TI corruption ranking

Budapest, December 1 (MTI) - Hungary has slipped four places to rank 54th on Transparency International s 2011 Corruptions Perceptions Index ranking, head of TI Hungary Adam Foldes said at a press conference on Thursday.

Budapest, December 1 (MTI) - Hungary has slipped four places to rank 54th on Transparency International s 2011 Corruptions Perceptions Index ranking, head of TI Hungary Adam Foldes said at a press conference on Thursday.

Hungary s score on the index -- 0 to 10, with 10 being the least corrupt -- was 4.6, down from 4.7 in 2010. Two-thirds of the 183 ranked countries scored under 5, TI Hungary said.

"Last year, independent institutions playing a key role in fighting corruption have been jeopardised in Hungary, which further deteriorated the country s perception," Foldes said.

He said analysts had acknowledged that politicians were being held accountable, which he said had no bearing on fighting corruption, but he added that no comprehensive or effective anti-corruption measures had been adopted. The analysts also assessed that legal guarantees and the rule of law had been compromised and political corruption was apparent in the public sector, he said.
