Roma integration has big impact on majority, says inclusion state secy

Budapest, October 8 (MTI) - The majority in society must realise that their future is greatly affected by the integration of the Roma, Hungary s state secretary for inclusion said at an international conference on Saturday.

Budapest, October 8 (MTI) - The majority in society must realise that their future is greatly affected by the integration of the Roma, Hungary s state secretary for inclusion said at an international conference on Saturday.

There is a significant labour shortage in Europe, mainly in the West, but those jobs are not being filled by the 10-12 million members of Europe s Roma community, but by immigrants from other continents, Zoltan Balog said at the conference on Roma strategy organised by the Kiralyhagomellek Reformed Church District of Romania. If the employment rate among Roma were the same as the European average, it would add 3-5 percent to gross domestic product (GDP) of countries, he added, citing economists.

Providing for several million people through social support is a luxury, Balog said.

While the majority of society is growing older, Roma society is becoming younger, he said, noting that 30-35 percent of Hungarian youth under the age of 14 are Roma.

Balog said it was extremely important that the organisation of Roma integration programmes not be left to Roma alone, but also that others should not do the work for them. Roma integration has to continue on the basis of partnership, he explained.
