Census begins in Hungary

Budapest, October 1 (MTI) - Hungary s 2011 census started on Saturday morning and will last until the end of October.

Budapest, October 1 (MTI) - Hungary s 2011 census started on Saturday morning and will last until the end of October.

Census takers started delivering the questionnaires last Tuesday. Residents can answer the questions, also on the internet, until October 16 or contact their census officer, who will meet respondents and help fill the forms or just collect the completed sheets.

Some 40,000 census takers have been recruited to cover 100-120 households each.

Foreigners who have resided in Hungary for more than three months will be asked to fill in a form, too, but Hungarians who were abroad in the past 12 months will not be asked to participate.

Some questions asked during the last census ten years ago have been abandoned (ownership of holiday home, marital history, daily working hours), while new questions added relate to international migration affecting Hungary and the population s health.

Eszter Viragh, KSH spokesperson for the census, told MTI that over the past two decades Hungary had a markedly positive balance of international migration, with far more immigrants than emigrants registered. As an example, she mentioned the year 2009 when 25,582 immigrants and 6,047 emigrants were recorded by the Hungarian authorities.

The spokesperson added that this trend had partly offset the population loss caused by the significantly higher number of deaths than live births. For nearly 15 years, she said, fewer than 100,000 births and more than 130,000 deaths a year have been registered in Hungary.
