Socialists stand by former PMs Gyurcsany, Bajnai

Budapest, September 3 (MTI) - The opposition Socialist Party will stand "with all its political weight" by former Prime Ministers Ferenc Gyurcsany and Gordon Bajnai, and rejects the ruling Fidesz party s "practices aimed at blackening members of previous governments", a member of the Socialist board told reporters on Saturday.

Tibor Szanyi called Prime Minister Viktor Orban s government a "puppet theatre performing horror stories" and accused the judiciary of assisting to what he suggested were show cases of holding former officials to account over earlier decisions.

Szanyi referred to an earlier-planned casino project at Sukoro near Lake Velence in central Hungary, which the prosecutor s office is investigating and in which both Gyurcsany and Bajnai had been implicated.

"Hands off the former prime ministers and other officials of the previous Socialist governments," said Szanyi.

Last week, Bajnai was summoned by the authorities to testify in the case, in which property exchange deals are believed to have caused significant losses to the state.

Gyurcsany called the allegations "absurd" and said he considered the case surrounding the one-billion-dollar development project as politically motivated.
