Romania court gives green light to new ethnic Hungarian party

Bucharest, September 15 (MTI) - The court of appeals of Bucharest on Thursday approved an appeal for the official registration of the Hungarian People s Party of Transylvania.

Bucharest, September 15 (MTI) - The court of appeals of Bucharest on Thursday approved an appeal for the official registration of the Hungarian People s Party of Transylvania.

Organisers of the new party - activists of the Hungarian National Council of Transylvania (EMNT) - collected over 30,000 signatures in support of the initiative, however, Romanian authorities rejected the registration request in June, on grounds that the new organisation only promoted the interests of a community rather than the whole country. The EMNT appealed against the first ruling.

EMNT head Tibor T. Toro told MTI earlier that the new party was planning to focus on issues of public interest, with special regard to ethnic minorities and human rights.

EMNT vice-president Elod Papp welcomed the Bucharest court s decision and said that the ruling helped restore "people s faith in a state governed by law".
