Washington, DC, September 16 (MTI) - Hungary is making good progress on the road to solidifying its democracy but the United States have expressed concerns to the Hungarian government about the lack of consultations during the process of drafting a new constitution as well as several new laws, Thomas O Melia, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Department of State s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, told a news conference on Friday.

Melia told journalists that consultations between the government, in command of a two-thirds parliamentary majority, and the opposition and independent civil society groups had not taken place.

"We think that it would have strengthened the process of reforming the constitution had a greater emphasis been placed on building a consensus," he said, adding that the Washington administration had turned to Prime Minister Viktor Orban, expressing concerns over several laws, including the church and media laws.

Melia said that Hungary fulfilled democratic norms relatively well and the US continues to give constructive feedback to its Hungarian friends if it sees that there is room for improvement, as it does in the case of other democratic friends in the world, he added.
