Radical party Jobbik says govt doing nothing to fight "Gypsy crime"

Budapest, January 12 (MTI) - Hungary s government has not done anything since taking power to combat what radical nationalist party Jobbik terms "Gypsy crime", a party official told a news conference in Budapest on Wednesday.

Csanad Szegedi, the opposition party s deputy leader and an MEP, insisted that so-called "Gypsy crime" statistics had worsened, yet the Fidesz-led government "was not even inclined to recognise its existence".

Szegedi said unless the basic problem was recognised the situation would further deteriorate.

Jobbik continues to propose among its measures setting up local gendarmeries, expanding boarding schools and suspending social payments to the whole family if one of its members is convicted of a crime.
