Media law - Parliament gives green light to new public media foundation

<p>Budapest, September 13 (MTI) - Hungary s parliament on Monday gave the green light to setting up a new Public Service Foundation to replace the current foundations managing the assets of public television and radio, as well as the national news agency.</p>

The proposal, a component of the government s media package, was passed by 245 votes for and 92 against.

    According to parliament s decree, the new foundation is to ensure "free and independent public media services, freedom of speech and the press, guaranteed independence, balance and objectivity in information supply, and the independence of  Hungarian Television, Hungarian Radio, Duna Television, and news agency MTI under society s control".

    Members of the foundation s board will be elected by parliament, while its chairman is to be delegated by the Media Council of the new National Media and Broadcasting Authority.
