Biography of Pal Schmitt
<p>Budapest, June 29 (MTI) - Pal Schmitt was voted 4th President of the third Hungarian Republic on Tuesday.</p>
Schmitt, 68, was the joint nominee of the centre-right Fidesz party and its Christian Democratic ally.
Schmitt is a senior member of the Fidesz party, a former member of the European Parliament and a veteran sports diplomat.
Graduating as an economist, he went on to become a mainstay of the Hungarian epee fencing team, winning Olympic gold medals in 1968 and 1978, and world champion s titles in 1970 and 1971.
Embarking on a career as a sports official in 1981, he was elected member of the International Olympic Committee in 1983 and become president of the Hungarian Olympic Committee six years later.
From 1993 Schmitt served as Hungarian ambassador to Madrid, and then in Berne.
Supported by Fidesz, he vied for the Budapest mayoral post in 2002 as an independent candidate. He joined Fidesz in 2003 and served as deputy leader until 2007. Heading the Fidesz list, he was elected to the European Parliament in 2004 and 2009. He led party s EP group was a vice-president of the European People s Party.
When he was elected Speaker of Parliament last month, he resigned his European parliamentary mandate.
The mandate of Laszlo Solyom, Hungary s incumbent president, will expire on August 5.
