Stricter smoking laws to apply from Jan 1.

Budapest, December 30 (MTI) – Changes in legislation on smoking will come into force as of Jan. 1 in line with the government’s efforts to reduce the country’s high smoking-related death rate. The changes include:

- smoking banned in all closed spaces, including workplaces, restaurants and pubs; fines apply from April only

- smoking areas can only be assigned in open air spaces, at least 5 metres from the entrance, but not at child-care, education or health-care facilities

- indoor smoking only allowed in “cigar rooms” of hotels, at product presentations and at institutions where people are incarcerated (prison, psychiatric care units)

- excise tax on tobacco to go up twice, in February and July; the govt targets extra revenue intake of 20 billion forints (EUR 64.5m)

- mandatory health-warning images to appear on cigarette boxes as of September

- laws since last summer ban smoking on all public transport including long-distance trains, at stops and stations and in underpasses and playgrounds
