Budapest, April 19 (MTI) - The cycling-promotion rally Critical Mass will be held for the last time on Saturday, nine years after its first outing in Budapest, organisers said.

Held biannually since 2004, the rally has grown into a massive event drawing tens of thousands of cyclists and growing into a civil movement in its own right. Organisers said the initial goals to promote cycling have been achieved, with the number of cyclists rising ten-fold since 2004. The grouping will now concentrate on professional interest representation.

On Saturday, Earth Day, the last big rally is planned to take off from Szent Istvan park, near Margaret Bridge on the eastern side of the Danube, at 3.55 pm. After cycling 16 km on the city s roads closed to traffic, cycling enthusiasts will have a fete in the City Park, which kicks off with the emblematic simultaneous raising of bicycles into the air.

Several environmental programmes will also be held in the morning in the capital to mark Earth Day.

Greenpeace will organise a group photo event on the Danube embankment where the Dutch Embassy will also organise cycling and environmental programmes.

In the morning civil groups will celebrate cooperation with businesses in the Danube Flow project, to promote the values of the river. Free events include walks in central Budapest and a guided cycling tour leaving from Batthyany ter at 9am.

The Cyclechic fashion show will close the day at the central Deak ter in the evening.
