President Schmitt calls for promotion of mother tongue

Budapest, June 18 (MTI) – President Pal Schmitt called for efforts to preserve the Hungarian language at a festival organised by linguists at Szephalom near Satoraljaujhely (NE), on Saturday.

“Never has the Hungarian language been so beautiful and rich as now, but it is in a troubled state, just like any other language,” the president said at the Museum of the Hungarian Language, situated on the estate of early 19th century author and language reformer Ferenc Kazinczy.

Schmitt argued that the language was jeopardised by tendencies to simplify structures and abbreviate words, to use the phrases of text messaging and of the internet “to the detriment of the beautiful Hungarian language”.
