Pay rise, promotion could make doctors return, says resident association

Budapest, October 18 (MTI) – Most of the over 5,000 Hungarian doctors now working in foreign countries would return to Hungary if they were offered higher pay and appropriate promotion in their careers, head of the Hungarian Resident Association Magor Papp said on Thursday.

Papp told a press conference held after talks with Human Resources Minister Zoltan Balog that in 2013 further steps are needed to raise salaries for health-care staff and urged measures to eliminate illegal tips from patients to doctors.

At the meeting, the minister supported the association’s proposal to set up an ad-hoc committee to review the curricula of specialist training programmes, Papp said.

The number of graduate doctors leaving Hungary first rose above one thousand in 2007 and the tendency has since seen a steady rise.
