US Embassy appreciates govt position in connection with Gyongyospata events

Budapest, April 27 (MTI) - The US Embassy appreciates the Hungarian government s position in connection with events in Gyongyospata and its rejection of intimidation of minority groups and violence targeting them, the embassy told MTI in a statement on Wednesday.

MTI asked the embassy to respond to remarks by Janos Farkas Sr., the national vice-president of the Roma Civil Rights Movement, saying earlier in the day that all 450 Roma residents of the town had turned to the embassy to apply for asylum in the United States.

Events at Gyongyospata are regretful, the embassy said, stating at the same time that it would not comment on press reports on the local Roma seeking asylum in the US.

The embassy said it is the duty of the local authorities and the Hungarian government to handle the security issue in the town, in coordination with local residents.
