Politicians pressure authorities to reopen Gripen graft probe - paper

Budapest, January 20 (MTI) - Politicians have asked the authorities in Hungary to reopen an investigation into the procurement of Swedish-made Gripen fighter aircraft, Nepszabadsag daily said on Thursday.

The paper said the decision on whether to examine claims of corruption connected with the procurement rested with the public prosecutor, Peter Polt.

Gunnar Stetler, the head of the Swedish prosecution s anti-graft unit, told the paper that the Hungarian prosecution service had the right to request data for an investigation from the aviation company but requests by other parties had been denied.

Stetler said politicians from green party Politics Can Be Different (LMP) and the Hungarian government had asked for information in connection with the case. He said that the Swedish prosecution authority had been obliged to withhold the related file because cooperation on investigations was only possible between the matching authorities. However, it was ready to hand over data if the Hungarian public prosecutor made such a request.

A wider investigation into graft accusations in connection with Gripen deals going back to the 1990s was concluded in 2009. It concluded that nothing untoward had taken place in connection with Hungary s deal to acquire 14 Gripen aircraft in a multi-million-euro offset arrangement. Two similar investigations of Gripen aircraft acquisition in the Czech Republic were concluded without finding any evidence of graft but the files were reopened last year, the paper said.
