Nat’ Theatre reception cancellation "regrettable", says Romanian FM

Budapest, November 18 (MTI) – The Romanian foreign ministry said on Thursday it was “regrettable” that Robert Alfoldi, director of the Hungarian National Theatre, had decided to withdraw an agreement to lease the facility for a reception on November 30, the eve of Romania’s national holiday.

In light of excellent bilateral relations and the strategic partnership that exist between the two countries, the ministry said the current situation was “an isolated exception.” It is regrettable that “under pressure from the threat of political protests” Alfoldi withdrew an agreement with the Romanian Cultural Institute for renting out the building for a reception, the statement said.

The national day of December 1 marks the Alba Iulia national assembly, which declared the unification of Transylvania (until then a Hungarian territory) with the Kingdom of Romania in 1918.
