Demonstrators mark anniversary of PM speech that sparked riots

Budapest, September 17 (MTI) - A few hundred people joined a demonstration in front of parliament Saturday afternoon to mark the fifth anniversary of the leaking of a speech by then prime minister Ferenc Gyurcsany that sparked riots and a protest that lasted for weeks.

In the "Oszod speech" Gyurcsany conceded his government had "lied day and night" about the state of the economy before the 2006 general elections.

The demonstration on Saturday was organised by the Hungarian National Commission 2006 and the Sixty-Four Counties Youth Movement (HVIM).

Tamas Gaudi-Nagy, an MP of opposition party Jobbik, told the demonstrators Hungary s current government had promised an accounting in their campaign, but now "it is as if it isn t important to them".

Balazs Lenhardt, another Jobbik MP, said that today, just as in 2006, there is no rule of law in Hungary. Jobbik has few tools available to it in parliament because the government, which is "not acting in the national interest", can do anything with its two-thirds majority, he added.

Jobbik MEP Krisztina Morvai asked the people gathered in front of Parliament to "organise demonstrations against criminal of bankers".

The demonstration ended peacefully.
