More than half of Hungarians disapprove of participation in Afghanistan

Budapest, September 18 (MTI) – Fifty-two percent of Hungarians asked in a survey by daily Nepszabadsag disapproved of their country’s participation in the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan, but 69 percent supported Hungary’s NATO membership, the paper reported on Saturday.

The non-representative survey showed only 35 percent supported Hungary’s participation in the mission in Afghanistan. Forty-three percent of respondents said Hungary’s participation weakened the country’s security.

Hungary has participated in the mission in Afghanistan since 2003, but it took on a bigger role from 2006. Since then, four Hungarian soldiers have died there.

Two-thirds of those surveyed said the information the government provided on Hungarian soldiers in Afghanistan was insufficient.

The survey was of 556 regular internet users 18 and older.
