Ministers agree on cyber-crime – Navracsics

Luxembourg, June 10 (MTI) – EU justice ministers on Friday agreed on new rules to combat cyber-crime, including cracking down on hackers who cause damage to IT systems, Hungary’s Justice Minister told a news conference.

“So that the victims of crime should have better protection than up to now, the ministers agreed on a timetable for mapping the weak points of national regulations,” said Tibor Navracsics.

The rules to go before the European Parliament will allow for EU member states to carry out investigations in each other’s countries. The ministers also decided to create a cyber-crime unit, possibly operating under the auspices of European police agency Europol, as well as tougher sentences for hackers.
