Media law – EU assessed law within its scope of authority, says Reding

Vienna, February 18 (MTI) – When judging Hungary’s media law the European Union has had to keep within the scope of its authority, the vice-president of the European Commission Viviane Reding said on Friday.

Reding said expectations of the commission’s powers had been inflated and “did not reflect reality”.

”Europe is not a superstate,” Austrian news agency APA quoted the commissioner for justice, rights and citizenship as saying in Vienna.

The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights is only applicable in areas where EU laws are incorporated into national laws, Reding said.
