Hungary to launch Roma projects with German help, says minister

Berlin, October 10 (MTI) – The Hungarian government will launch Roma projects in collaboration with the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma and the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) and the German Robert Bosch Foundation, Zoltan Balog, the Minister for Human Resources, said after holding talks in Berlin on Wednesday.

Balog told MTI that the “Minorities helping minorities” programme is supported by the Robert Bosch Foundation and four out of 20 educational, cultural and employment projects would be launched on an experimental basis from 2013.

Balog met Andre Schmitz-Schwarzkopf, Berlin’s Cultural Senator and the president of the Schwarzkopf Young Europe Foundation and agreed that forums would be organised in Berlin on the subject of Hungary’s image and its German aspects.

Balog cited Schmitz-Schwarzkopf as saying that they must address topics where it appears that debates centre around Hungary because “even Europe doesn’t know what its position is”.

He added that the “Roma-issue” was not only Hungary’s concern but one that had to be looked at in European dimensions.
