Hungary PM informs EC president about passage of central bank law

Budapest, December 30 (MTI) – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Friday informed European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso about the passage of a new law on the National Bank of Hungary (NBH), and sent him the full text of that piece of legislation, the prime minister’s spokesman Peter Szijjarto told MTI.

In a letter addressed to the EC president, Orban said that Parliament had considered the European Central Bank’s recommendations, and incorporated most of them into the law.

The prime minister assured Barroso that the new law fully complies with the EU law and directives.

Orban said he would be prepared to clarify any detail in a consultation, if need be.

The prime minister made it clear that during the mandate of the current central bank president the government would not take the opportunity of merging the NBH with the financial market regulator PSZAF, said Szijjarto.
