Hungary changes in place by June, 2012, says Fidesz’s Lazar – paper

Budapest, December 31 (MTI) – By June 2012 the changes implemented under the Fidesz government will have been completed in Hungary, after which a calmer period will ensue, the parliamentary group leader of ruling Fidesz told the regional daily Delmagyarorszag in an interview published on Friday.

Janos Lazar, who is also the mayor of Hodmezovasarhely, said that it was time to assess what had been learnt since the 20 years of transition between 1990 and 2010, and to implement the necessary changes. He said he hoped that the outcome of this assessment would leave a country operating with a “simpler, more efficient and competitive system”.

The year 1990 was all about putting democratic guarantees in place in order to prevent a return to autocracy. Yet this thwarted efficiency. Now the task is to put in place an efficient system so that democracy should not be impaired,” said Lazar.

Lazar said state must ensure the realisation of certain values: to protect the institution of the family, equal opportunities for children and respect for work.

“We’ll see how the new state system works, and if it does not work properly, the government can be ousted. This is democracy,” Lazar told the paper.
