Hungarian, Austrian green groups press governor against waste incinerator project

Budapest, February 4 (MTI) – Hungarian and Austrian green groups on Friday called on the governor of the eastern Austrian state of Burgenland to act consistently and withdraw the permission for a contentious waste incinerator planned very close to a Hungarian residential area near the border.

At the press conference the groups held at the site of the planned project in the Heiligenkreuz industrial park they presented a video footage on Governor Hans Niessl sharply rejecting a similar waste treatment scheme on Austrian territory.

On the footage Niessl is shown as reassuring his audience he would do his best to block the depot project.

Zoltan Soos, the head of the Hungarian green group PRONAS, called on the governor to restrain from applying “double standards” in his conduct of the two projects and retract the permission for the Heiligenkreuz incinerator.

Hungarian and Austrian residents and civil groups in the region have been protesting against the Heiligenkreuz project at international forums over the past three years.
