EU commissioner Kroes welcomes swift Hungarian response amending media law

Brussels, May 6 (MTI) - The EU s Digital Agenda Commissioner praised the Hungarian authorities swift response to concerns raised by the European Commission over its media law earlier in the year.

Neelie Kroes addressed a media conference in Brussels on Friday and outlined the four areas the EC had challenged in connection with Hungary s new media law. She commended that Hungary had made the necessary adjustments to the law.

The European Commission will closely follow the implementation of the amended law, she said.

Under the amendments parliament passed in March, on-demand audiovisual services, like blogs, will no longer be required to adhere to rules of providing "balanced coverage", and will be allowed 60 days to register with the authorities when starting a new service. In addition, the law s restrictions will not apply to media outlets located in another EU member state.
