Govt to retroactively restore maternity leave to 3 yrs, says official

Budapest, November 25 (MTI) – Hungary’s government has decided to reinstate three-year maternity leave with retroactive effect, a senior official told a news conference on Thursday.

Miklos Soltesz, state secretary for family and youth affairs, said mothers who were currently on maternity leave, and originally expected a two-year arrangement, would be able to take advantage of the reinstatement of the three-year rule.

In addition, the government has decided that mothers who return to work part-time will only get maternity payments if they work a maximum of four hours a day.

Under the previously long-standing maternity system in Hungary, mothers were able to keep their jobs while taking out a three-year leave of absence to care for their newborns, while maternity payments declined each year.
