Every third Hungarian suffers depression, 7 pc severely impacted – conference

Budapest, October 18 (MTI) – One-third of the Hungarian population suffers from some level of depression, including anxiety disorders, the chairman of the Hungarian Psychiatric Association told a conference on Thursday.

Some seven percent of the population suffers from severe depression, Pal Lehoczky said.

World Mental Health Day in October this year carried the slogan “depression, a global crisis,” he said.

Despite the deteriorating mental health of Hungarians, fewer patients in need of psychiatric attention have access to specialised services, according to a report from the State Audit Office (ASZ) for the period of the last six years, he said.

He added that Hungarian health care suffers from the problem of the best doctors and specialist nurses seeking jobs abroad.
