Around 200 demonstrators turned up at the square to protest against the law, which they say is discriminative. Speakers at the event said they stood for freedom of conscience and choice.
Gabor Ivanyi, head of the Hungarian Evangelical Congregation, told participants of the three-hour demonstration that the government “is dictating to us and [...] this is usually called a dictatorship”.
The parliamentary leader of opposition party LMP, Andras Schiffer, also attended the protest.
The bill, expected to be enacted later on Friday, officially recognises 14 congregations as established churches and allows other faiths to apply to parliament for recognition, dependent on the vote of a two-thirds majority.
