After an hour-long meeting with ERRC leaders, Buzek said that it was unacceptable that members of a minority were being branded, since everyone in Europe enjoys the same European citizenship and should also enjoy the rights and opportunities that go along with it.
He said that the issue of immigration signifies difficulties for the EU, but the issue is not linked to any one country and especially not any one minority.
The EP president said that the EU has a commitment to spreading the concept of human rights in the world, and it is primarily the member states which should sustain respect for this commitment.
The formation of similar operations to the ERRC would be very important for the European community in fighting social exclusion and poverty, he said.
Buzek told MTI that only after the European Commission has completed its investigation of the Roma issue in connection with France would concrete steps be taken to ease tensions, and that investigation would also determine whether the French government would face legal proceedings.
