Distance-based electronic toll collection to be introduced by mid-2013

Budapest, May 3 (MTI) – Electronic toll collection based on the distance travelled will be introduced by July 2013 the latest in line with the government’s second Szell Kalman economic plan, the official gazette Magyar Kozlony said on Thursday.

Annual extra revenue of 150 billion forints is expected from the introduction of the ETC system. The system is planned to be introduced for vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes but discounts will be available to frequent travellers. Tolls will be calculated after coordination with EU institutions.

 

Cars and buses will be offered the chance to choose between the current electronic sticker system and the distance-based toll system on motorways six months after the introduction of the ETC.
