City of Debrecen wants to organize another international sport event. If the City Council will vote yes in September, Debrecen will apply to the Youth Olympic Games 2010. The International Olympic Committee decided on the establishing of the Youth Olympic Games this summer, on 5th of July in Guatemala City.

Even though Berlin, Moscow, Athens and Torino are among the candidates, Debrecen has a good possibility to win, says Mihály Orendi. The director of the Debrecen Sport Company argues that IOC wants to help the small cities and countries instead of the biggest cities.

Only 15 sports are included in the event and not more than 4000 competitor – age group 14 to 18 – and accompanist can participate altogether.

Debrecen already has the setting for the game, so there is no need for big investments – says Mihály Orendi to the Hajdú Online (the local daily newspaper).

According to another source, IOC will also sponsor the games with a considerable amount of money, around 30 million dollars which is almost 6 billion forint.
