Debrecen wins first-division championship undefeated

Budapest, May 26 (MTI) – The team of Debrecen has won Hungary’s 2011-2012 first-division soccer championship after going through an entire season undefeated, the first team to do the trick since Vasas’s winning streak 46 years ago.

Debrecen has triumphed in the championship altogether six times during its 111-year history, with all the gold medals garnered over the past eight years.

Debrecen will take part in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.

Runner-up Videoton, fourth-placed Honved and second-division champion MTK, which lost the cup final to Debrecen, have gained the right to compete in the UEFA Europa League.

The European federation excluded bronze medallist Gyor for three seasons last year due to club licensing violations.

Vasas and Zalaegerszeg have been eliminated from the first division.
