Court hands life sentences in Romanian handball player murder (adds more sentences)

Budapest, June 23 (MTI) – A court in western Hungary on Thursday issued two life sentences in the trial for the murder of Romanian handball player Marian Cozma, who was stabbed to death outside a nightclub in 2009.

The Veszprem court handed down the terms sought by the prosecutor to Sandor Raffael and Gyozo Nemeth, the primary and secondary defendants, and handed the third defendant, Ivan Sztojka, a 20-year prison sentence.

All three suspects were accused of murder and causing bodily harm.

The fourth and fifth-degree suspects received 5 and 4 years imprisonment for being associates in the crime, while the sixth and seventh suspects were sentenced for 4 years and 32 months, respectively, for abetting it.

The sentences are all subject to appeal at a higher court.

Cozma, the mainstay of the MKB Veszprem team, was stabbed to death in front of a club in Veszprem in February 2009.
